How Do Garage Door Openers Work

Today’s garages can be used in a lot of different ways, from the traditional use of storing cars and seasonal goods, to being transformed into a home office, gym or playroom for children. In fact, nearly 70 percent of all homes across the United States have an attached or detached garage or carport. But this wasn’t always the case.

In wasn’t until the 1920’s, swiftly following the advent of the modern automobile, that a man named C.G. Johnson, from Detroit, designed the modern garage to help families and homeowners protect their home and belongings. A few years later, Johnson was able to design the overhead door system using electricity for the first time ever.

Prior to this, people would store their expensive cars in public structures, or would share the carriage house with horses and other equipment. These carriage houses had doors that swung outward, and had a simple dirt floor and basic walls. In winter snows or other weather, this style of garage would often pose additional risks, and problems around reliability. But Johnson’s invention allowed greater convenience throughout the changing weather seasons, and better accessibility.

Since then, there have been many changes to the style, fit and horsepower of the door. But when it comes to operating, the overhead door system has remained steadfast in its original design so that it continues to help keep families and homes secure from the elements and safe from harm.

While there are different styles, the main function of the system is similar. Every garage door is made up of an opener, a track and cable, a tension spring and of course the door. The opener contains the electric motor and some form of a driver – chain, belt, screw, jackshaft and direct - that works with the springs and motor to lift and lower the door along the track. The two most common types of drivers are chain and belt.

Chain Driver

The chain driver is the oldest technology of all the power unit options, and was what originally was used with Johnson’s invention. Very similar to a bike-style-chain, this tried-and-true method has been around for generations, making it more cost effective, but also noisier compared to other options.

Belt driver

The belt driver is much quieter than a chain driver, because it is made from a rubber material and allows the door to lift and lower without the clanking of the chain. This material also tends to last longer and is easier to maintain, which can help people save costs over the lifespan of the door opener.
